In 2018 Germany’s population reached 83 million people. A record high, resulting largely from migration from eastern Europe.

Net migration in 2018 amounted to 400,000 people, half of which arrived from the European Union states. Within this group, most arrivals were from Romania (68,000), Croatia (29,000), Bulgaria (27,000) and Poland (20,000).

When compared to previous years, there are fewer refugees from war affected countries arriving in Germany.
